For Parents Who Pay Child Support

What's going to change?

The change should not affect parents paying child support without an employer notice of withholding. You will continue to pay as you paid in the past.

  • If you sent payments directly to the custodial parent, you should continue to send your payments to the custodial parent.
  • If you paid to the Clerk of the Circuit Court, you should continue to pay the Clerk of the Circuit Court.
  • If your payments are withheld from your paycheck, your employer will continue to withhold the payments and to send them to the SDU.

My payments are not withheld by my employer. Where do I send my payments?

As explained in the previous answer, you continue to send your payments exactly as you have in the past.

What about my annual $36 fee?

Every parent is still required by law to send $36 per year to the Clerk of the Circuit Court. Send a cashier's check or money order payable to the Clerk of the Circuit Court at the following address: Child Support Division, 28 North Clark Street, Chicago, Illinois 60602. (Be sure to add the court docket (case) number to the cashier's check or money order).

What if my payments are withheld from my paycheck?

They will continue to be withheld from your paycheck. You are responsible for the statutory $36 fee explained above.

What should I do if I change my address or employer?

You are required to report immediately any change of address or change of employer. If the order was filed by a court, you must report any changes to the Clerk of the Circuit Court for the county in which the child support was originally filed. If the order was administrative, report any changes to the Illinois Department of Public Aid, Child Support Enforcement Division. If you are not sure whether the order was entered by a court or by an administrative body, contact the Clerk of the Circuit Court for the county in which the child support was originally filed. Contact information for the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court is listed at the bottom of this page.

What if I have general questions about where and when I pay?

For information regarding a support order, notice of withholding or your case generally, you should continue to call the Circuit Court Clerk. Contact information for the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court is listed at the bottom of this page.
