Description and Cases Heard

The Civil Division hears actions in which the amount of the claim is less than $30,000. The  types of cases heard include: contract, property damage, personal  injury, eviction, replevin, county use tax forfeiture, attachment and garnishment actions. The Civil Division is located on the sixth floor of the Richard J. Daley Center. Civil Division cases are also heard  in each of the Suburban Districts.

Civil Division Housing

The majority of the cases filed  in Housing Court are brought for ordinance violations of the Building Code regarding health,  fire and zoning codes. For  more information  contact the Housing Court Liaison, in room 602 of the Richard J. Daley Center. 312/603-3563.

Civil Division Pro-Se

The Small Claims Court section of the Civil Division resolves disputes between parties where the amount at issue does not exceed $1,500. The party may act as their own attorney. For more information on pro se cases, please call the Civil Division for the First Municipal District (Chicago) which is located on the sixth floor of the Richard J. Daley Center 312/603-5626.

Case Types: All cases are for claims of less than $30,000. Types of cases include: contract, property damage, personal injury, eviction, replevin, attachment,  garnishment, and building code violations.

Dates: Civil Division files are retained  for 21 years and then destroyed pursuant to statute. A sample of cases is retained from each year for historical purposes.
