I am saddened today to learn of the passing of Rev. Dr. Johnnie Colemon, who founded the Christ Unity Temple in 1956, which was expanded into the Christ Universal Temple and Complex in 1974, the same year that she founded the Universal Foundation for Better Living.  Rev. Dr. Johnnie Colemon was renowned as an insightful and dedicated religious leader who earned the title of “First Lady of New Thought.”

Until her retirement in 2006, Rev. Dr. Colemon ministered to 4,000 church members of the Christ Universal Temple and Complex in Chicago, and a total congregation of 22,000 members of 30 churches across the U.S., Canada, and Caribbean.

She was committed to teaching and connecting with people through the churches, institutions of learning, and other facilities she built. She was also a talented writer who authored the book, Open Your Mind and Be Healed.

Her church members and followers were drawn to her spiritual teachings that focused on healing, meditation and thinking positive thoughts to improve one’s life. She was known for spreading the gospel of success and prosperity.

My thoughts and prayers are with Rev. Dr. Colemon’s family, close friends, and the thousands of members of Christ Universal Temple and the Universal Foundation for Better Living.

Rev. Dr. Colemon will be greatly missed, but her teachings will continue to manifest in the lives she has touched.
