The Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County Intern Application

Program Summary

Looking to gain meaningful, real-world experience in public service, law, technology, or government operations? The Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County offers a comprehensive internship program within the largest unified court system in the United States.

Interns will be placed in operational and legal divisions across Cook County, supporting the Clerk’s mission of access to justice, transparency, and integrity. Through this hands-on experience, interns will work alongside dedicated professionals to build practical skills, expand professional networks, and gain insight into the inner workings of a high-volume public office.

This internship program is administered in accordance with Section XI of the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County Employment Plan. Final selection is subject to review by the Director of Compliance and is contingent upon successful completion of criminal background check and submission of required documentation.

Program Requirements

Time Commitment

  • Program dates: June 1 – August 21, 2026
  • Orientation: Mandatory four-day onboarding session (week of June 1)
  • Weekly commitment: Minimum of 24 hours per week (typically three full business days)
  • Work hours: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Location: On-site only; remote work is not available

Internship Duties

Interns will support Clerk’s Office staff with a range of responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Responding to public inquiries by phone or in person
  • Assisting with general administrative and office functions
  • Supporting court operations, filings, or IT service requests
  • Conducting research and compiling information for staff
  • Assisting with special projects assigned by Clerk's Office leadership
  • Gaining exposure to divisions such as Civil, Criminal, Court Administration, Archives, Human Resources, External Affairs, and more

All interns are expected to comply with Clerk’s Office conduct standards, dress code, technology use, and confidentiality policies at all times.

Required Materials (must be submitted as a complete packet):

    1. Schedule of availability, outlining the days and times you can commit to the program
    2. Areas of interest (select up to three departments for preferred placement)
  2. Cover letter
  3. Resume
  4. Transcript (official or unofficial)
  5. Two letters of recommendation
    1. One from an academic instructor or advisor
    2. One from a current or former employer, supervisor, or volunteer coordinator
  6. Signed Affidavit and Consent to Criminal Background Check
  7. Applicants interested in working with either the General Counsel or Inspector General’s Office must provide a writing sample (maximum of 10 pages, academic or professional preferred)

Availability and Academic Credit Notice
Interns are required to identify their areas of interest and provide a clear schedule of availability, specifying the days and times they can contribute to the Clerk’s Office. A consistent weekly commitment of at least 24 hours is essential for a productive and meaningful internship experience.

Students seeking academic credit must share their educational institution’s internship requirements (such as required hours, learning objectives, supervisor evaluations, or documentation needs) before the program begins to ensure proper coordination and a smooth integration of academic and professional goals.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Law students may apply for designated legal internships
  • Final placement is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check
  • Applicants must not have open warrants or active criminal cases
  • Must be able to commit to scheduled hours and attend mandatory orientation
  • Must adhere to Clerk’s Office dress code and conduct policies
